Bootsie NastyVCS Released 0

The NastyVCS (Virtual Channel Strip) has an input preamp section, an equilizer, an opto compressor and a limiter and the sound rivals those of really expensive commercial plugins. Anyone have any suggestions about how I can get Bootsie to start bringing these plugins to the Mac!? This and his Ferric TDS are must owns if you are using the PC VST format.

We Moved! 0

Ahhh! I’m semi-unpacked and trying to get life back to normal. The problem is that our new home office (aka bedroom) is in Brooklyn NY now; a place where life may never be normal. I’m very excited to start Chapter 2 of the AFB saga and am planning on bringing some big changes like video tutorials and hopefully some interviews with artists inside of their workspaces.

Anyway, here’s a freebie that came out last week that we overlooked while packing up and moving – Elysia released a free filter which is identical to the filter section on their mpressor plugin. Click here to download the Elysia Niveau Filter. (for AU, VST and RTAS…w00t!)

Liquidsonics Reverberate LE 0

Last post I linked to you to IRs (impulse responses) that Vampire Weekend used on their last record. Most major recording software packages come with a convolution reverb which can process these IR files and allow you to you use libraries of sampled IRs from all around the web. Apple Logic has Space Designer, Cubase comes with REVerence, etc. But if you’re using some other recording software such as Audacity or Ableton Live, you might want to look at adding Liquidsonics Reverberate LE as a weapon in your audio arsenal. Unfortunately, PC VST only.

Note: They also have Reverberate (sans the LE), a £30 version which has some modulation options to give the tail of your reverbs some extra life, a really nice feature. This works for PC VST AND Mac OSX.

Vampire Weekend Uses Free Spring Reverb IR 1

In late 2008, a thread was started on Gearslutz asking what reverb Vampire Weekend used on their self-released record. The vocals certainly have a unique polished sound on that record but I think the answer to the question surprised a lot of people. It even prompted user hankdrummer to proclaim “and there ends gearslutz”. LOL continue reading »

Sound On Sound Teaches Reverb 101 0

If you are new to using reverbs or mixing in general, this article will get you started with some good workflow examples.

For slightly more advanced users or if you want read more theory on using reverbs, the pros give their thoughts in part 2 of Sound On Sound’s “Use Reverb Like A Pro” series.  Names like Barresi, Visconti, Chiccarelli and many more who I don’t want to disrespect by omitting give examples of the techniques they use on hit records. This one is a must read!

Airwindows Dual Mono Verbs AU 1

Airwindows just released a new set of reverb Audio Units called FarSpace and NearSpace. Due to the fact that Airwindows believe that they bested their previous reverb attempts, they’ve decided to make their old reverbs freebies! This set of reverbs simulates spaces and doesn’t have any adjustable parameters. Basically, you choose between VerbTiny, Verb Small, Verb Medium, Verb Large, Verb Huge, Verb Colossal and Verb BrickWall and layer them as you wish to get the sound you are looking for. They sound really good to me but I’m a huge Airwindows fanboy.

Scroll down to the “Free” section on the Airwindows website to download “Dual Mono Verbs” and give them a shot. And while you’re there, snag the FreeverbCJ, too. Oh Airwindows, how you spoil us.

Stillwell Audio Drops Another Bomb 0

In this case, the term “bomb” is a good thing. Stillwell Audio introduced the new Bombardier Buss Compressor today and it is a beast. Go download the evaluation version at their site and try it out!

PureMagnetik Ableton Live Packs 0

If you are an Ableton Live user (which I am currently work on becoming), check out PureMagnetik’s site for some new sounds and instruments. PureMagnetik makes Live Packs which are available by paid subscription, but they also offer some freebies which offer some nice drum and synth sounds. Also, in the “Artist Kits” section of their site is even more free stuff.

Max for Live was recently just released which is a modular programming environment to create your own synths and effects. Luckily there are hundreds of presets already out there for you to use right away. PureMagnetic is working on some new ones and are offering “Spectral Mixer” for free.

Tal Elek7ro 2.5 0

Yes, this great freebie has been out for a few months but I only got a chance to really put it through its paces this weekend. I had two remixes to do and I decided early on that I would use Tal Elek7ro as the basis of these tracks. One was a hardcore dubstep son driven by the infamous wobble bass sound and the other was a disco house track.

The filter is great on Elek7ro and apparently the envelope has been improved over the previous version to allow for easier creation of percussive sounds. I’ll probably do some video tutorials on sound creation using this simple but powerful synth but in the meantime download it and get playing.
